An eye-opener!

World-class optometry equipment was the focus of a visit to UWE Bristol’s Glenside Campus by Metro Mayor Dan Norris as he opened its new £2 million Bristol Eye Clinic.

This summer saw the first group of UWE Bristol Optometry graduates complete their degrees, and the new clinic will offer future students placement opportunities so they can perfect their skills with patients.

Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “The West of England is home to some of world’s best learning, teaching and research facilities. The UWE Bristol Eye Clinic is the latest addition and I wanted to see for myself how it’s being used to train students and to serve local people.

“Getting an eye test is so important, and this new clinic is open to the public with an NHS contract to give eye tests, and organise glasses and contact lenses.

“People living in and around Fishponds, Frome Vale, Lockleaze and Eastville will find the location convenient. In fact, as many won’t previously have been aware of this clinic, it could prove a real eye-opener.”

The Metro Mayor’s visit also signalled the formal opening of UWE’s new School of Health and Social Wellbeing, which is home to 13 specialist professions, over 4,000 students and 300 academic staff. The range of its work includes public and environmental health, social work, and professions allied to health, nursing and midwifery.
