Metro Mayor Dan Norris visited MB Tempora, home of Floating Harbour Films, to find out how a grant from the West of England Combined Authority which he leads is allowing them to launch a brand new service so more people can experience live events from their own homes.
Floating Harbour Films, which is marking its tenth anniversary on the barge, has used the cash injection to buy a new wireless video transmitter system. This means they can simultaneously film and broadcast events live. This is perfect for the Covid era with many hybrid events, and some people watching in person and others at home.
West of England Metro Mayor Dan Norris said: “One great thing about this new kit is that it’s compact and easily portable to events from its floating home, making the whole experience plain sailing. Cutting the time taken to set the kit up at the event on the day reduces the cost to the event organisers, which sounds ‘ferry’ impressive!
“There’s no doubt that in-person events have changed since the start of the pandemic. I was interested to find out about levels of demand from organisers to have events filmed for future broadcast and simultaneously streamed live to those who can’t get there.”
Floating Harbour Films works with a range of organisations in the creative sector, as well as universities, animal welfare organisations, charities, museums, member organisations, sporting federations and businesses. The new equipment will be used for a range of events including panel discussions, interviews, presentations, conferences, launch events and award ceremonies.
Talented creative people in the region who want to expand their work can now apply to join the second round of the West of England Combined Authority’s Creative Sector Growth Programme, delivered in partnership with The Watershed.
The five-month programme is open to anyone working in the creative sector including arts and culture, film, tv production, theatre, web design, marketing and photography. Those interested have until Monday 22 November 2021 to apply, with those who are successful receiving the support from January 2022.
