Welcoming the announcement today (Friday 28 April) that Richard Sharp has resigned as BBC chairman, Mayor Dan Norris said: “Richard Sharp is right to resign, but he should have been sacked weeks ago. His stint as chair has seriously undermined both the BBC’s independence, and its reputation in this country – and round the globe. That’s had real knock-on effects for the West of England. We’re rightly proud of this region’s creative industries, and the many, many programmes made in the West, and broadcast far and wide – think David Attenborough’s brilliant, and Bristol-made, Wild Isles. But the controversy around Sharp has caused untold damage to the BBC, and that undermines all these programmes and the brilliant West of England workers who’ve helped make them. It shouldn’t have taken an investigation, called by Labour, to bring this sorry saga to an end.”
